Glass Closet Magazine

When thinking about what kind of magazine I wanted to create, my mind went to things I am passionate about; one of those being part of the LGBTQ+ community. I knew immediately I wanted to create a magazine that highlighted topics and people rarely seen in our community, like what it means to have safe, protected intercourse or highlighting smaller, underground queer creatives. That was the base that Glass Closet was built off of. Check out the final product and the process of creating it below.

WHERE TO BEGIN…

After narrowing down the name, it was time to start sketching out a masthead for the magazine. I wanted to encapsulate a feeling of coming out of the closet, shattering a class ceiling, or the uniqueness of being in the queer community. With this in mind, I was able to create a variety of mastheads and narrow it down to a few to be refined.

STARTING THE DESIGN PROCESS

With a masthead chosen, sourcing articles and images to be put into the magazine was the next step. I found many amazing interviews and pieces on small queer creatives and a few discussions on safe queer intercourse. After all of the articles were collected, I decided it best to work on pagination for the magazine to help on making a cohesive layout.

PAGINATION

As everything was ready to be put together, I worked on creating interesting, clean, and easy to digest layouts for the pages. I wanted the information to be legible and clearly understood as it was important that the mission of the magazine remained the star of the page. The imagery chosen was deliberate and was used to create a feeling of consistency throughout the spreads. Combining all of these elements together into a single piece of work was a very fulfilling task, both for myself and for the creativity and energy used to create this queer magazine.

FINISHING TOUCHES

In addition to the physical magazine, I also created an Instagram account for the publication. With each issue a series of images would be posted to create a grid on the magazine’s profile. Each post would highlight one of the creators and some of the smaller articles that are seen throughout the magazine. Check out how it looks on my Instagram here!
